Any good sore throat remedies?

I have had a sore throat for 5 days straight. I don’t think that I have strep because I haven’t had a fever and my glands aren’t swollen. Does anyone know anything that will help a sore throat?

    Natural remedy 1:

The saltwater gargle – This is something you most likely heard from your mother and she probably forced you to gargle it quite a bit. She was right to do so! It is one of the most known and used sore throat cures around.

Salt is an antiseptic which helps to inhibit growth of infectious microorganisms. So it’s an antiseptic mouthwash. It is weaker than other antiseptics but it does the trick. Salt also takes water out of the mucous membranes in your throat and this will obviously help you to get rid of or lessen that annoying phlegm.

I usually put about a teaspoon in a glass of water – A good measure of how much to put in is where you defiantly notice it but don’t get sick from it.

    Natural remedy 2:

Apple Cider Vinegar – Bacteria will be blown away and killed on contact because of apple cider vinegar being so acidic.

This can be gargled every hour if you like and you can swallow this one after gargling. Apple cider vinegar offers potassium, among other things, which is good for you. You may want to rinse your mouth out with some water to protect the enamel on your teeth though. Again you can use your own discretion and tolerance to decide how much to put in but a rule of thumb is 2 tbsp for a glass of water.

    Natural remedy 3:

Garlic – I love garlic and eat it raw at least once a day which is why I probably don’t get very many sore throats or colds at all. But for those of you who don’t like it as much as me it may be hard to do what I’m about to suggest…just remember that the goal is to get rid of the sore throat, not have the best tasting things go in your mouth and skip around delighted with the taste but still have a sore throat…if you like skipping that is.

The best thing you can do is to chew a whole piece of garlic in your mouth and let it go down your throat. When you chew it you are realising all the healing powers of the inside and juices. Otherwise you are just swallowing the garlic without actually letting it hit your throat or mouth. It’s antiseptic again and it burns to let you know it’s doing it’s thing. Garlic is antiseptic, antifungal, antisocial…and so much more – it’s quite versatile.

Quick fun fact: The more garlic you eat the less you smell of it. I never smell like garlic.

    Natural remedy 4:

Honey – As a side note I have seen many older people who natural reach for honey when they feel a sore throat coming on. In fact I worked at a nursing home and it was quite a panic for them if there was no honey around. There is years of experience and usage behind it. So just from that fact alone you know it’s good!

    Honey soothes and coats.

It has also been shown that an enzyme which gets added to the nectar by the bees is a mild antibacterial agent and it has antibiotic properties as well. The enzyme makes hydrogen peroxide – a harmful bacteria killer.

Many people use it in a tea but you can also make it into a paste with your garlic and eat it that way. Yummy! – You can also make other mixtures as well.

Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar – Mix equal parts of both apple cider vinegar and honey and take one tbsp as needed for pain relief.

Honey and lemon juice – Just make it into a mixer that is drinkable because you want to get it down fast.

    Natural remedy 5:

Slippery Elm – If you check out a health food store you will find sore throat lozenges made with natural ingredients. Chances are slippery elm is in them.

Mucilage is a matter that turns into a slick gel when water when water gets mixed with it – and slippery elm contains it. It coats and soothes your digestive track from your mouth to your intestines.

If you are pregnant or nursing, as with any herb, you may want to hold off with this one as the safety of it hasn’t been researched.

And in addition to any remedies you try make sure you are drinking tons of water. This helps clear out the mucous and get everything working at it’s optimal level to help speed up your recovery.

Ginger is a natural antiseptic for the throat and great for your digestive system too. Ginger root is dirt cheap at the supermarket, get some and cut it into chunks and boil it in water for an hour and make yourself some ginger tea. You can also pick up ginger tea in bags at the supermarket usually.

Another great solution is Oil of Oregano, a couple drops under your tongue, wait a few seconds, swirl around your mouth and swallow. It is very powerful and has always kept sore throats at bay for me.

If you’re looking for something to prevent re-occurences, consider taking a mushroom supplement, they are amongst the most powerful antivirals on the planet. Shiitake, Maitake or Reishi will all do the trick.

Gargling is your best bet. Warm salty water, hydrogen perxiode, Listerine, cayenne pepper tea.
Also drinking hot teas, soups, etc all help.
