Natural Hypothyroidism Management?

I have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My levels are low, but they are not dangerously low (yet) and I would like to look into more natural ways of managing the disease. I am a college student and admit that my diet is minimal and probably low in and at times all together lacking essential components. The doctor I saw was pretty against my being a vegan and suggested my higher intake of soy products may be having an effect. My mother was diagnosed at 24, so I honestly think it’s a genetic predisposition. However, I am willing to make the necessary changes to my eating habits and lifestyle to avoid taking synthetic medication.

Does anyone have any literature they could recommend?
