What are the best natural remedies for severe depression?

I’ve had severe depression since dealing with a major trauma in my life last year. I tried Wellbutrin but I had such a horrible reaction to it I weaned myself off it after 4 months. I don’t really want any medications. I’d like to maybe try things like accunpuncture or St. John’s Wort.

Unfortunately going to therapy isn’t really an option because my family’s finances were hit hard due to everything. I would really, really like to but even with insurance it’s super expensive (0 a session is what we were told)
I’m only 17 so drinking isn’t an option. I want healthy solutions. I do exercise a lot already (I was a gymnast for 10 yrs) but it hasn’t helped that much.

    Learn to pamper and nurture yourself. Experiment with aromatherapy, eucalyptus especially, I find it to be exceptionally refreshing, revitalizing and energizing. You can use Wallflowers from Bath and Body Works from their aromatherapy line. Enjoy the music of everything surrounding you. Sing like the morning birds. Spend time with a pet, its been shown pets reduce stress and depression in humans, talk to them, play with them, take care of them. Start a meditation routine to unravel your thoughts and reconnect (you could buy "Meditations" by Sylvia Browne). Spend time outside. With trees. Enjoy the background sounds of nature. Soak up the warm of the sun, feel the vitamin D entering your skin while enriching it and making it beautiful. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to depression.

    Nutrition is vitally important. You need to make sure your diet is deficient in simple carbs, high saturated fat foods, and other bad foods since these only make you fatigued and tired. Concentrate on eating foods high in zinc, magnesium, iron, Vitamin B and complex carbohydrates. As well as Omega-3 and other essential fatty acids since these can work better than prozac. Give yourself treats of course! It can be from a pretty sweet cupcake to occasionally having a small splurge. Avoid caffeine, keep a good schedule of your meals to avoid insomnia or hypersomnia. Instead focus each day to make at least one productive thing other than homework; it’ll give you a sense of accomplishment. Instead of therapy, why don’t your try talking to someone you trust? It can work just as effectively if not more.

    Exercise is one of the best remedies for depression. Go out and walk/jog/run everyday. You’ll find your body deals with stress better when you exercise.

    Find a good friend you can talk to. It’s like talking to a therapist but free. They can offer advice and support for dealing with your depression.

    Try to find a hobby that really takes your mind off of everything else.

    Other things that could possibly benefit you are exercise, some kind of group activity or sport.

    you could try kava a drink that could take the edge off of the depression but i would only go to this as a last resort.

    I have always gained weight when I would take antidepressants, SO, I would be fat AND depressed. I started looking into more natural remedies. I wanted to know what SCIENTIFIC, peer-reviewed studies were saying about natural remedies. What I came up with was this, and was confirmed by my primary care doc:

    400mg/day of Sam-E (S-Adenosul Methoionine) before you eat in the morning
    1000mg/day of Omega 3-6-9 (keep in the fridge so you don’t get fishy burps)
    1000mg/day of Magnesium
    Exercise 4-6 days/week until you are exhausted.

    All those supplements can get expensive, and some of the pills are big, but I think they work. There’s good scientific evidence that they can be helpful for some people.

    As I said, the exercising part is the most important. I know, I know, you don’t feel like exercising because you’re depressed, it’s a vicious cycle. But when you’re depressed, you need little "wins" here and there. Just go for a walk for 30 minutes on the first day. Or just walk up and down the stairs if you don’t feel like leaving the house. The next day you’ll want to do more, and more the next day. It will be good for your general health, but will also release the hormones in your brain that will make you happier.

    It will take about 4-6 weeks for everything to kick in fully. So take your time, keep it up, and I hope you start to feel better soon. 🙂

    First off, getting up and about, not just exercise, but physical labor. Physical labor gives you the exercise, plus you get sh:t done which helps the psyche a lot. And all it takes of this is 3 or 4 hours a day. Back when I was dealing with severe depression, I planted a garden and spent hours tilling and caring for it.
    Secondly, find someone to talk to, therapy rarely helps. What helps it talking to a close friend over a some drinks (be careful with alcohol though, it actually helped me, but it is a rocky road that can easily end in ruin). Or talking to a family member.
    Also, Meditation is wonderful. Being able to not think and shut off your mind is one of the best things ever and clears your head up significantly.
