What are some natural remedies without medicatons for sleeping at night?

I’m prescribed lunesta, but i don’t take it because it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth all day the next day. What are some better ways to help me sleep at night? I usually just end up staying up for 2 or three nights straight and then i sleep really good that next night. but i wish i could actually sleep good every night. I hate taking medicine though. so anybody know any natural remedies. I do drink coffee but only in the morning. You don’t think i should give up coffee do you?

    I tried lunesta too. It did not work very well as a sleep aid, and I agree about the terrible taste. Many people should not drink coffee after 3 PM. It’s unlikely you should give up your morning coffee unless you are hypersensitive to caffeine.

    Below is a long list I once wrote about ways to fall asleep. The list is so long that reading it might put you to sleep 🙂 This list is the one that Tony I copied and pasted from me without my permission.

    If nothing below works, email me and I can give you some suggestions about over the counter and prescription meds, if necessary. However, the natural remedies below are safer and free of side effects.

    What helped me a lot to fall asleep, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. The combination of voice and music is very soothing. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.

    A warm bath is a great way to help you to sleep (depending on the season). If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.

    A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., until your whole body is relaxed.

    Of course, guided relaxation methods can help. As vividly as possible, imagine yourself at the beach, in the mountains or country, or whatever is most soothing to you.

    If you have annoying thoughts that run through your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps.

    There are herbs that might help you to sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. However, what most people don’t realize is that it can take at least a few weeks for some herbs to build up in your system before they start to work.

    The minerals calcium and magnesium might be helpful for sleep. You can also try 5-HTP or melatonin. I would not take melatonin for over a month unless your doctor says it is ok.

  • You shouldnt drink any kind of caffeine after 6pm. Try drinking warm milk or tea before bed and there’s also an herb called valerian root which can be found anywhere vitamins are sold.

    aromatherapy is meant to be effective, try a lavender pillow you can get the instructions on how to make this yourself online of buy one from a health shop. Also aromatherapy oils in a bath before bed will relax you and prepare your mind for sleep

    you should try exercising more, that way your body will be more tired at night. also, there are some teas you can buy that help you feel sleepy. i think you are making a good choice not taking medication. those sleeping pills seem to be unhealthy. good luck. 🙂

    Have you tried Sleepy time herbal tea? I make a strong batch (3 bags) in a small pot that holds about 16 oz. and drink it about an hour before I plan on going to bed. It really helps me. Add sugar to taste if you like…or lemon. I also have white noise going in the background. I use a large fan at the end of my hallway. If it’s dead silent I can’t sleep.

    This is from the book "Uncommon Cures for Everyday Ailments" –
    Soak a washcloth in cold water, then lie down and put the compress over your abdomen. Some naturopaths and Asian medicine healers believe that the cold compress pulls energy from the head to the torso, relieving much of the pent-up stress responsible for keeping you awake.

    One way to distract the bedtime mind from the days’ troubles is to count backwards. You can start with 100. Count slowly, mouthing the words to yourself. If you lose your place, do not be bothered. Start over at 100. This is about falling asleep, not counting.

    Not to be used every day because it is a natural depressant, valerian is a strong smelling(some say foul) root that can induce drowsiness.A teaspoon of tincture with about 2 oz of water is the suggested dose about a half an hour before bedtime. You might sample valerian tea products too. (CAUTION) It doesn’t work for everyone. Valerian can make some people overly drowsy in the morning, and can become addictive if combined with alcohol.

    Passion flowers. Pour boiling water over one teaspoon of dried passionflower and steep for 15 minutes. You can also blend two parts valerian root with one part passionflower to make it even better.

    Siberian ginseng extract. 1 teaspoon in your favorite beverage before bedtime.

    I like the other suggestions thus far, except the alcohol one (good grief!). Here are some more:

    Valerian extract. On nights when you can’t get to sleep, a gentle herbal extract can do the trick. Take two teaspoons of valerian liquid extract (Valeriana officinalis) mixed in 1/4 cup warm water. As you wait for the herb to take effect, read a book. You can safely take two more doses of valerian throughout the night if you wake up again. Be aware that valerian makes some people jittery. If you have that reaction, try skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) or passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) instead.

    Another valerian tea can be made by combining one cup of water, one ounce of lemon verbena, one ounce of lemon peel and one ounce of valerian herb in a pot. Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat and add remaining ingredients. Let steep for 3 to 5 minutes; strain, and drink slowly.

    Chop a yellow onion and put it in a jar with a lid. Place on your night table. When insomnia hits….open the jar and take a few good whiffs. Lie back and think lovely thoughts. You should be asleep within fifteen minutes.

    Aniseed and water. Mix about 1/4 cup of aniseed in one cup of water and bring to a boil. The aniseed should relax you and help you fall asleep.

    Red clover sleep tea:

    1 cup water
    1 ounce lemon verbena
    1 ounce birch leaves
    1 ounce red clover

    Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat and add herbs. Let steep for three to five minutes; strain, and drink slowly.

    Hot pack and towel. Heat the hot pack up in the microwave for about a minute and a half then wrap it in the towel, put it on your neck and go to bed. It should help you relax and fall asleep

    Melatonin. Take two three mg tablets about 45 minutes before bed. Do not take during the day. Melatonin is a natural substance produced by the body itself.

    Darkness. Any amount of light on any part of the body can interfere with sleep. Take measures to darken your sleeping area as much as possible.

    Chamomile tea with milk. Before going to bed, drink chamomile tea with milk. No sugar – if you must sweeten, use Stevia. Often, warm milk by itself works well.

    Turkey. Turkey contains a natural ingredient that makes you drowsy. And you always wondered why you felt like nodding off after Thanksgiving dinner, didn’t you?

    Lettuce and water. Stevia (optional) and lemon (optional). Boil water, place a few lettuce leaves in a mug and then add boiling water to the mug. Cover until cool. Add Stevia and/or lemon to taste. If you have no Stevia, you may use a little honey, but not too much or the sugar high may interfere with your sleep.

    Open your mouth and try to yawn. Bring on a yawn… another….another…keep going…chances are you’ll be asleep in no time.

    The best natural remedy as far as I know is a warm glass of milk just before bed.

    also you can use 2 mugs of beer as an alternative.

    Valerian – may cause next day sleepiness though.
    A combined magnesium/calcium supplement – take at night – both are natural relaxants.
    Hot milky drink at bedtime – milk contains natural relaxants.
    I take 5htp and that helps me to fall asleep – it will lift your mood during the day as well if you’re feeling a bit depressed.

    Personally, I find the passiflora is the best. It won’t knock you out like a drug though, so give it a few days to get into your system.

    Hi Amanda. The best natural remedy is dairy product. Have a yogurt, drink several glasses of milk in the day, and think of me then you will be able to sleep well at night.

    No caffine, no refined sugar, don’t nap, and have a small glass of warm milk before bed.

    Some natural things you might try include drinking chamomile tea or warm milk before bed, taking a warm bath or listening to soothing music or sounds like the sound of waves.

    Many people also swear by reading to help them fall asleep.

    Most will not recommend exercise before bed, but for some people, working out an hour or two before bed and then taking a warm bath or shower can help relieve the anxiety that may be leading to your sleepless nights.

    To relieve insomnia, you should avoid substances that make it worse and have good bedtime habits that make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Make sure your bedroom is a comfortable temperature, dark, and quiet enough for sleep.

    Good bedtime habits include:

    – Prepare yourself for sleep by, e.g. preparing a ‘to do’ list for tomorrow, so that such distractions are at their minimum when you actually hit the bed.

    – Turn your alarm clock so that its glow doesn’t let you know of the time ticking away.

    – Not exercising, eating heavy meals, or drinking a lot shortly before bedtime. One exception is yoga. A number of yoga postures are designed to calm your body and prepare you for sleep.

    – If you share a bed, buy a king size bed with two different mattresses so that you two don’t disturb each other while sleeping.

    – Making your bedroom sleep-friendly. Avoid bright lighting and minimize possible sleep distractions, such as a TV, computer, or pet.

    – Going to sleep around the same time each night and waking up around the same time each morning, even on weekends. If possible, avoid night shifts or alternating schedules at work and other causes of irregular sleep schedules.

    Both herbal and homeopathic remedies are commonly used alternatives to sleeping tablets in reducing insomnia, and can be very effective in helping to assist an individual in the transition to peaceful slumber without strong sedatives or any concerning side effects.

    Certain herbs such as Hypericum perforatum, Scuttelaria laterifolia, Passiflora incarnata can be used to maintain healthy sleep patterns and promote optimal balance of sleep-related hormones involved in the sleep cycle.

    Homeopathic remedies such as Coffea C30 and Nux Vom. C30 are also used to reduce insomnia and maintain restful, satisfying, and healthy sleep. Other natural supplements that are widely used to address the underlying causes of chronic insomnia are calcium lactate, magnesium lactate and vitamin B6.

    Just seeing so many great answers at one time for the same question. That in itself is enough remedy to make me sleep good for a few day.
