Some very basic quetion on cholesterol?

And if you have high cholesterol do you have it for life? No way of making the cholesterol low ?

  • "High cholesterol" doesn’t actually mean anything, because there are two kinds of cholesterol: "Good" cholesterol(High Density Lipoprotein, HDL) and "Bad" cholesterol(Low Density Lipoprotein, LDL). HDL ferries cholesterol away from the tissues to the liver, and LDL does the exact opposite. As a result, high HDL levels compared to your LDL level means that you have a smaller chance for cholesterol buildup in your blood vessels, and your risk of heart failure decreases. While LDL is necessary for biological processes(Cholesterol is a very important component of the nervous system, for example), lowering the amount of it in your blood is almost always beneficial. Vice-versa, if you elevate your HDL level, that’s good, too.

While cholesterol levels are partly genetic, there are a few things you can do. Sports, for example, will elevate your HDL level. Not just any kind of sport, either, it has to be an endurance sport(Meaning it has to be a sport that you do for an hour, maybe two at a time, and that is physically tiring). Another thing is alcohol. A glass, maybe two of wine or beer a day is very healthy, but don’t exceed it by too much. Don’t smoke, either. Lay off the fatty foods(Don’t abstain from them, just don’t abuse your local McDonalds). There are a few other things you can do, so you can do some online research about that, too, there should be plenty of sites with info on this.

Don’t underestimate cholesterol – Atherosclerosis, a disease caused by cholesterol buildup in your arteries, is the leading cause of death in the Western world.
