Bring our Children back to Nature…is that so hard?

I turn 61 this year and although my childhood was almost half a century ago I still have vivid and fond memories of being in the country and exploring nature.

To remind me of those days is a large painting of a young girl and boy in a river catching sticklebacks with a small net and jam jar. It is in my brother’s house and it takes pride of place above the fireplace. I know my brother bought it because it reminded him of when we were young and used to trawl the rivers for small fish.

My summer memory is a vivid one of running among the clusters of daffodils that surrounded the cathedral in the local town. Then there is the feeling of sand between my feet as we ran up over the dunes of the beach chasing and hiding among the scattered dune grass that provided us with cover.

I remember the excitement of adventure when my father told us we were moving to Africa. We dreamed of fierce lions and elephants and my brothers and I would sit for hours and ponder on the wildness of the country we were moving too. Our stories were exaggerated ones of bravery and intrigue.

Africa was wonderful. The smells, the wildlife and the closeness to the natural world changed us as children. As my father was a Vet we lived in very rural situations.The different tribes of Africans affected us, their simplicity and joy in all kinds of situations made us very appreciate teenagers who looked at life with a global perspective and a thirst for knowledge of anything that moved and was deemed wild and interesting. It’s no wonder that I became a Biology and Animal Health lecturer and one brother became an Ecologist.

I grew up with nature and I still crave it. I think about children today and their learned priorities of socializing on the computer or playing games. Their time with nature sometimes seems organized instead of natural and that is a real shame.

Children today suffer from many physical and mental problems that could be helped by encouraging our children to experience nature. In N. Ireland where I live I hear of a teenage suicide every few months.

What brings someone so young to those depths?

Nature takes away our stresses.When we walk in a forest the trees and the plants disperse out negative energy. The smells affect our brains making us feel good and the exercise reduces our waistline. In the UK 28% of girls aged 2-10 are now obese and the figure has doubled since 1998. We push our Education system to achieve excellence at the expense of our natural being. Research has shown that playing in a natural environment improves a child’s concentration,social and mental development and physical and mental health.

Maybe if we got that right first the rest would follow.

Facts about Genital Warts

 

 

Genital warts, also known as condyloma, or condylomata acuminata, is a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection. It is spread during oral, genital, or anal sex with an infected partner. Genital warts are the most easily recognised sign of genital HPV infection.

Genital warts often occur in clusters and can be very tiny or can spread into large masses in the genital or anal area. In women the warts occur on the outside and inside of the vagina, on the cervix, uterus or around the anus. While genital warts are approximately as prevalent in men, the symptoms of the disease may be less obvious. When present, they usually are seen on the tip of the penis.

They also may be found on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, or around the anus. Rarely, genital warts also can develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sex with an infected person.

 Genital warts often disappear even without treatment. In other cases, they eventually may develop a fleshy, small raised growth that looks like wadi. There is no way to predict whether the warts will grow or disappear. Therefore, if you suspect you have genital warts, you should be examined and treated, if necessary.

 

Depending on factors such as the size and location of the genital warts, a doctor will offer you one of several ways to treat them.

* Imiquimod, a topical immune response cream which you can apply to the affected area

 

* A 20% podophyllin anti-mitotic solution, which you can apply to the affected area and later wash off

* A 0.5% podofilox solution, applied to the affected area but shouldn’t be washed off

 

* A 5% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream

 

* Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)

 

* Pulsed dye laser

 

* Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery

If you are pregnant, you should not use podophyllin or podofilox because they are absorbed by the skin and may cause birth defects in your baby. In addition, you should not use 5-fluorouracil cream if you are trying to become pregnant or if there is a possibility that you could be pregnant.

If you have small warts, the doctor can remove them by freezing them, burning them or with laser treatment. Occasionally, the doctor will have to use surgery to remove large warts that have not responded to other treatment.

Some doctors use the antiviral drug interferon-alpha, which they inject directly into the warts, to treat warts that have returned after removal by traditional means. The drug is expensive, however, and does not reduce the rate that the genital warts return.

Although treatments can get rid of the warts, they do not get rid of the HPV virus, so warts can recur after treatment. However, the body’s immune system typically clears the virus anywhere from 6 months to a year. There is even some suggestion that effective treatment of the wart may aid the body’s immune response.

One of the modules I teach in college is Nutrition. In the teaching class we have many interesting discussions on the different food groups and we also do a dietary analysis on what we eat each day. When we start  analysing foods it becomes obvious  that many foods out there marketed as “healthy” are anything but healthy.

Here are 6 foods that fall into that category

  1. Organic Crackers

According to food researchers from the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University, organic crackers deserve a place as a  top offender.  When we see the name “organic” we kind of assume the food would contain fewer calories and have less fat than the non-organic boxed crackers at your local grocery store.

Well that is not the case.  Processed foods are just that—processed and that means They means they usually contain a lot of sodium to make up the difference, and we usually end up eating twice as much because of that fact.

  1. Organic Cookies

These have all the right words that spell healthy and they may not have chemicals and artificial sugars  but they have natural sugars and these will add the pounds

  1. Diet Soda

This is a debate that has gone on for a while .Are diet soda any good  and are they better for you over regular sodas . the truth lies that neither are good for us. Diet sodas are full of artificial sweeteners which have the effect of making us want to drink more. They also contain aspartame which is a poison and over time can result in symptoms like those of Multiple sclerosis.

  1. Bottled Juice

These are marketed as green juices and health smoothies. Some of them can contain as much as 50 grams of sugar ..about 10 spoonfuls!

Drinking these drinks on a regular basis can lead to all sorts of problems like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

  1. Granola

This is my favourite. So many people think that this is a healthy muesli but  let me assure you that Granola is full of sugar and fat.

Some people will argue that it contains nuts and seeds and also oats which give us fibre but the problem comes from the fact that the recommended amount is a quarter cup and most of us would eat an awful lot more.

  1. Lean Frozen Cuisine

This are easy to pop into the oven when you get home after a days work. The servings are small and so sometimes one is not enough .To preserve frozen meals they are packed with chemicals and artificial ingredients like sugar and MSG  [Monosodium glutamate]

Both of these 2 badies effect the hypothalamus,the message centre which tells the body it is full

The TRUTH about Potatoes, Glycemic Index, and “White Foods”

I lecture on Nutrition in a college and constantly read lots of nonsense online about certain foods. One example is where many health and fitness professionals trash potatoes about being a bad carbohydrate choice because of the high glycemic index. Some even say such ridiculous things as “avoid any and all white carbohydrates”.

Now while I certainly agree that white bread and refined white sugar are two of the worst things we can be feeding our bodies, I don’t agree with avoiding any and all “white carbohydrates”

They tell you to focus on colors and stay away from white.

“White Foods” aren’t necessarily always the enemy

It’s true that colorful foods are great, but it is a big mistake to specifically avoid white foods! There are plenty of white foods that have specific nutrients that are hard to find elsewhere.

The new study, published in the British Medical Journal and which involved nearly 9,000 people aged 66 and older found that patients prescribed the drugs for any length of time — even just a few weeks — were 51 per cent more likely to get Alzheimer’s, compared with someone who’d never taken them.
