Sometimes normal thyroid tissue begins to grow, causing one or more nodules to develop within the gland. The great majority of these solid or fluid-filled lumps are noncancerous (benign), and most thyroid nodules don’t cause any symptoms. In fact, you often won’t know you have a thyroid nodule until your doctor discovers it during a routine medical exam.
You may want to see an endocrinologist who specializes on thyroid conditions.
Here different treatmonts are listed depending on the symptoms.

1. Wait and Watch
2. Thyroid Hormone Suppression
3. Radioactive Iodine
4. Alcohol ablation
5. Surgery
According to this site (Mayo Clinic) a benign tumor occasionally requires surgery. Go to it for more details.
i had a similar scare earlier this year, first off get a second opinion! secondly yes it might be the only way to remove it. i honestly cant remember if my doctor said there were other options other than surgery.
i lucked out and had a different problem with my thyroid. but make sure you get a second opinion before going under the knife
