I don’t know specifically for Vancouver, but they should have a mental health department at your county hospital. County hospitals are required to take care of people who need reatment regardless of their ability to pay.

Also, you may be able to participate in a trial/study. If you have a medical university in your area they can tell you if they have any studies that may relate to your specific issues. And often times, in addition to free care, they actually PAY YOU!

One other option is to check with your church (if you go) and see if they have soomeone on staff or a paritioner who is qualified and offers their care for free/low cost. If you don’t go to church, check with a local Catholic dioscese-I believe their St. Paul group may be able to help you. Even if you are not Catholic.

I was having a really hard time a few months ago and called the main number at my closest hospital (it was like 11 at night) and told the lady that answered something like "Hi.I think I need some mental health care. It’s not super-urgent-I’m not going to hurt myself or enyone else. But I don’t want to feel like this anymore and I think I need a professional to help me."

Of course, I felt like an idiot and a failure and started crying while I was trying to get that all out of my mouth. (I know I WASN’T an idiot/failure, but mental health issues/depression can sure make you feel like it.) I was so surprised when she transferred my call and I told the next lady the same thing and that lady stayed on the phone with me for over an hour talking, listening, calming me down, making suggestions for things I could do that night to feel slightly better, and making suggestions for who could help me during normal hours. I really thought they were just going to blow me off, but turns out I got some great free help immediately.

    Good luck to you!
