    MS24,
The Thyroid gland is a gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body. Thyroid hormones also help children grow and develop. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam’s apple, wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). It has the shape of a butterfly: two wings (lobes) attached to one another by a middle part. Thyroid disease encompasses any benign or malignant condition that affects the structure or function of the thyroid gland. This may include Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid, Chronic thyroiditis–Hashimoto’s disease, Hyperthyroidism, Hypoparathyroidism, Hypopituitarism, Hypothyroidism, Medullary thyroid carcinoma, Silent thyroiditis, Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, Primary hyperparathyroidism, Subacute thyroiditis, Thyroid cancer, Congenital goiter. Many menstrual problems may be symptoms of undiagnosed thyroid conditions. Rather than use up a great deal of space here, I shall add a second link for your interest with details of this particular subject.

It IS a gland up by the throat/neck.

Thyroid disease occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t supply the proper amount of hormones needed by the body.

Do two things…Google this and also talk to a doctor. It can be scary because my wife has something like this. Untreated and your body will have all kinds of bad things happening, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart trouble. Get treatment as soon as possible.

This link is about thyroid diseases. And yes, the gland is where you think it is. Use the links above.

The pituitary gland is the master gland of the body. It secretes TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone. A problem with this will affect thyroid function. The pituitary also controls the ovaries by producing LH and FSH. Often the problem lies with the pituitary but thyroid hormone levels can affect the metabolism of female hormones and interfere with the regulation of ovarian function.
