My recommendation is either the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107.

All identical mechanically and all built in the same factory by the same people. They have a 68bhp 998cc engine which is perfectly adequate for a car that size.

They cost £20/year to tax, are very cheap to insure and return at least 60mpg. They are tinny and they do rattle a bit but you’ll get that with any car in this class.

They all use engines designed by Suzuki and use a timing chain, so another plus point for reliability and cheap running costs (it never needs changed, unlike belt driven systems).

VW polo very good on fuel and they will not let you down if you keep up with the maintenance .

At 1.2 CC the ‘engine’ wouldn’t even be able to turn the gearbox input shaft. I think you mean 1.0 – 1.2 litre !!The days of unreliable cars are thankfully long gone. Take your pick from any of the popular European or Japanese offerings.
