What's a natural sedative?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some natural sedatives for panic attacks, anxiety and stress?
I’ve pulled myself away from anti-depressants and do not want to go back on them at all. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi There,

There are a number of herbal and homeopathic ingredients which may be of assistance, without the negative side effects of prescription drugs.

A holistic approach that addresses not only the symptoms of anxiety disorders, but the root cause and underlying imbalances, can help provide all-round support and natural health. Natural remedies have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to support the healthy functioning of the body, helping to encourage normal and efficient functioning of all the body systems. In more recent times, research has confirmed this traditional wisdom. Natural remedies for anxiety disorders can include herbs such as St John’s Wort. Clinical studies have demonstrated that this herb can be just as effective as prescription drugs, without the side effects. The calming effects of other herbs such as Passiflora incarnata, Scutellaria laterifolia (Scullcap) and Valerian, can help to take the edge off the initial exposure to the feared object or situation and reduce over-all anxiety. These remedies can be taken without the worry of unwanted side-effects and can help to restore the body’s natural balance and serenity.

There are also certain homeopathic remedies which are prescribed for specific Phobias and which can help to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and panic which accompany the phobia. Discuss these options with your doctor or consult a homeopath or naturopath for advice.

The most effective natural sedatives include passionflower, lavender, lemon balm, and St. john’s Wort.

Valarian is hit or miss for sleep, but very small amounts, like 5 to 15 drops of alcohol tincture, can be pretty effective for anxiety. Get used to the dosage before you take it if you plan on driving.

Skullcap is another one. It also gives you vivid dreams.

Ashwaghanda is a good tonic that reduces anxiety, aids sleep and will also boost your sex drive over time.

Hops and Kava kava are also some useful ones.

Try them and see which ones agree with you. If one doesnt work out too well, try a different one.

But what about the underlying cause of your anxiety? You might have to look at eliminating caffeine or tobacco, reducing alcohol consumption, sleeping better, and looking at diet and thing like food allergies. Anemia can cause panic attacks. So can heavy metal exposure. Some people get anxiety because they have a wheat or dairy intolerance which damages their intestines and they dont absorb enough B vitamins among other things…..You have to look at this as a total lifestyle issue.
