Does the common cold lower cholesterol?

If you lose 10 pounds in 1 week after battling the flu virus or a common cold, do you think it’s possible that you might lose 1mg of cholesterol?

Yes this is certainly possible. Weight loss secondary to any cause is associated with a slight reduction in the total cholesterol and LDL. Also if your consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol was reduced during this time, then it would also be associated with a slight reduction in the cholesterol. The exact reduction in total cholesterol and LDL is difficult to estimate without knowing your weight. Weight loss of 5-10% is associated with a reduction in the total cholesterol by 18% and LDL by 22% based on clinical studies. You are likely to gain the weight back after recovery and this would not be a long standing treatment for abnormal cholesterol.
