problems with thyroid?

can anyone tell me the signs of having a thyroid problem? I think I may have some signs but am not sure. I gain and loose weight (about 10 lbs) off and on without changing anything. I sometimes get real depressed for no reason and my neck seems swollen.(my choker necklace is much tighter than normal) I dont like to go to the doctor for no reason so can anyone help?

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body’s metabolism", it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. The symptoms of hypothyroid are similar to various other problems, so it’s important to have blood work done to check for sure.
Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
    Coarse, dry hair
    Dry, rough pale skin
    Hair loss
Cold intolerance (can’t tolerate the cold like those around you)
Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
    Memory loss
    Abnormal menstrual cycles
    Decreased libido

These symptoms can also be due to hypoglycemia, anemia, or another hormone imbalance. Only blood tests can rule out possible causes other than thyroid.

If you don’t want to see a doctor, you can get a home thyroid test. If the results show a problem, you can then decide to see a doctor about your thyroid. But while I don’t recommend self-diagnosis, without health insurance, it’s one way to take charge of your health.

It sounds like you may have a goiter. I have thyroid problems myself. This is defiantly something you need to have checked out. A simple blood test can tell if you are hypo or hyperthyroid. Better to go in and get checked and it be nothing then to not go and it be something. My mom had her thyroid removed last year because she had a goiter that was actually so big it was suffocating her at night if she slept on her back. Good Luck!
