Does anyone know of an herbal or natural remedy that has sedative or relaxing effects?

Looking for something to treat the symptoms of occasional anxiety, nerves, excessive worry…etc. I want to avoid going the prescription drug route for a sedative or tranquilizer. Anyone know of an herb or other natural remedy that produces relaxation? I don’t want to take something to make me sleepy or drowsy, just to be able to relax! Thanks…

L-Theanine is a natural relaxant without the side effects of drowsiness. You can find it at a health food store or your local Vitamin Shoppe.

Puritan’s Pride has many herbal supplements that may be just what you’re looking for.

  • Passi Flora tablets work well.
Bach Flower Remedies also work really well.
    Camomile Tea is calming.

    Hope this helps

I don’t know about ‘remedy’ but certain smells have different effects on people. Try going to candle store or if you wanted to you could go to a Bath and Bodyworks and see if they have anything that is considered a ‘relaxing’ sent.

If that doesn’t work you could just browse the herbal section of your favorite store and see if they have anything for relaxation.

Valerian – although it smells terrible! What I did was held my breath when I popped it in my mouth then swallowed it as soon as possible. No it doesn’t effect your breath… It was an idea my counselor gave me when I was trying to change my sleeping patterns – while I was in recovery. So try it – it really works.

Valerian Root tea is a good one to get to sleep. Lavendar (scent) is said to calm the nerves. St John’s Wort and Kava-Kava are said to produce similar effects to antidepressant and antianxiety meds. Watch your caffeine intake, and if you smoke, try to quit. Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants, and will do just the opposite of what you are seeking. Also, if you drink, remember that a drunken sleep is not as good quality sleep as a sober one.

  • essential orange oil works best for me….its calming and promotes rest, it also reduces stress and uplifts your mood…. and it is one of the less expensive oils.. (it’s just the oil from an orange peel)

  • I would recommend the powerful antioxidant Isotonix OPC-3. It is a natural supplement containing the three antioxidants grape seed extract, red wine extract, and another powerful antioxidant called Pycnogenol which is a natural plant extract from the bark of the maritime pine tree which grows exclusively along the coast of southwest France. All three antioxidants are put into one supplement hence the name OPC-3. The supplement is in isotonic form when mixed with the right amount of water so you receive superior delivery and absorption in your body. it’s isotonic capable, meaning it’s the same pH levels of the other fluids in your body such as your blood, plasma, tears, etc. isotonic capable supplements are the next best thing to IV (when doctors inject medication immediately into your blood stream); when you drink a supplement that’s isotonic your stomach does not have to change it to match your body, it enters your small intestines within minutes.
All the information on OPC-3 can be found at http://www.marketamerica.com/blittrean/index.cfm?action=shopping.wpProductNoShop&prodID=13007
At your local health and nutrition stores they sell OPC or OPC-1 for more money, and you only receive anywhere from 30% to 40% of what’s on the nutrition label due to the fact the supplement is not Isotonic capable.

The best thing to do if you would really like to know what would be the best supplement for you, I would recommend you to take a free questionnaire called the Nutri-Physical and get a report of what would personally be the best supplement for you, or you could get a custom supplement made for you.

The Nutri-Physical can be taken at
    https://www.marketamerica.com/blittrean/index.cfm?action=services.npHome

After you take the Nutri-Physical you will have the option to either view supplements already made that suit you or you will be able to check a custom cocktail and view what you need specifically; and have one made for you.

    Hope This Helps

Once the Nutri-Physical is complete, you’ll be able to view the results anytime at http://www.myunf.com
