Cholesterol vs Saturated fat?

The doctor says that I have high cholesterol but I have been eating foods that say 0 mg Cholesterol in the food label, but may have some mg of saturated fat.

What is the difference ?

I’m not sure how I can eat any differently to lower this. I’m already on one cholesterol lowering drug and would hate to have to take another one.

I’m so confused about what to do differently or what to do next.

Ah the joys of how doctors never explain anything to patients. Cholesterol comes from two sources, the food we eat and our own bodies. Our liver makes cholesterol because it is required for all cells in the body. The cholesterol that you eat actually has very little to do with your cholesterol levels. Saturated fat has a LOT to do with cholesterol levels. Eating large amounts of saturated fat raises cholesterol. So the two are actually connected. My recommendation to you is to eat more fruits and vegetables along with some WHOLE grains. These contain sterols which could lower cholesterol levels. They also have lots of soluble fiber, which helps to lower cholesterol as well. There are many other steps you can take to lower cholesterol but this is a good place to start. You should go to your doctor and have him explain the importance of diet and exercise and cholesterol levels. Also, with your cholesterol lowering drug…probably a statin…i would recommend going to CVS to get some CoQ10. CoQ10 helps prevent cell damage and statins actually decrease it in your body. If you need further explaination feel free to email me. Also if you start to notice any weird tingling sensations or changes in your body which are bad…go to your doctor…it’s probably your cholesterol drug…those things are not the best way lower cholesterol…

Saturated fat has a tendency to raise the amount of bad or LDL cholesterol in your body. I wouldn’t fret about taking more than one cholesterol lowering drug. I personally am on 4 different ones because I can not tolerate statin drugs.I have been on these drugs for a long time and have had no ill effects. I got to a lipid clinic that specializes in lowering cholesterol and mine is fine now. It took a lot of tinkering to get things just right but in time they came up with the answer for me.
