I have a cholesterol question..?

Alright, I had a blood test two weeks ago for a medicine I am on and the doctor said my cholesterol is a little high (it is at 171). I was wondering where I can get a chart to see what an ideal cholesterol is for my age.. I’m 17 years old, 6’1", and 220lbs, and male, if it matters. If anyone can provide a chart or give me an ideal rating, it would be much appreciated..

Ideal cholesterol and indeed lipid profile and HDL/cholesterol ratios, arguably the most useful measure on which to base vascular risks, are unrelated to age sex and weight. There is some debate but generally ideal cholesterol is considered to be 200mg/dl or 5.0 mmols/l.

Your Body mass index is 29. You are overweight.
Cholesterol– Normal level: < 200 mg/dL (< 5.0 mmol/L) Desirable level corresponding to lower risk for heart disease.
I don’t consider your cholesterol level is high. If it relates to low density lipoprotein(LDL), then it is high. Normal LDL level is < 100 mg/dL.
    Consult your doctor.

  • There are age related charts on…

If you reduced your weight a bit it would probably help cholesterol levels.

    Hi Thisismyname,

Here are the recommendations of the American Heart Association:

    Total cholesterol less than 200
    HDL cholesterol at least > 40, ideally > 60
LDL cholesterol at least less than 130, ideally less than 100
    Triglycerides less than 150

A total cholesterol of 171 mg/dl is very good.

    All the best,
