Thyroid conditions are very common for women and it is nothing to be worried about. I have had hypothyroidism for over 10 years and control it with just one pill a day and routine blood tests. It is good to catch a problem early on so that you can begin to treat it and too feel a lot better. Also, if you are on the correct medication your weight will be fine, I think someone mentioned that you will have to take steroids, that is just for one specif thyroid condition, not all. talk to your doctor.

There are a wide variety of symptoms, and of course not everyone presents in the same way. Just a few of the symptoms:
Trouble sleeping – either too much or too little
    Weight gain or loss
    Uneven fingernails
Change in attitude (this was how we figured my mother-in-law needed her medication changed)
    I hope this helps!

Several signs can indicate hypothyroidism (insufficient thryoid activity), including myxedema (puffiness accross the bridge of the nose), goiter (an enlarged thyroid, often a ball near the adams’ apple). Fatigue is also sometimes a symptom
Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is the opposite. It is due to excessive thyroid activity. Hallmarks include, again, goiter, and in severe cases, exophthalmia (buggy looking eyes), and hyperactivity, excessivy body heat. Hyperthyroidism is also known as Grave’s disease. There are other thryoid conditions, but these are the common ones. Usually a simple blood test is sufficient to test for them.
