Natural remedies for ADD?

I have struggled with ADD my entire life.

I’ve taken several different dosages of Aderol…concerta..ect.
They worked, but the side effects are awful. I lost personality, appetite…expierienced some depression. I couldn’t sleep. And when I couldn’t sleep, they wanted to medicate THAT side effect with ridalin. I decided sophomore year in highschool i’d had enough.
and then I experienced tremendous weight gain after I got off the pills…long story short, I wouldn’t recommend behavioral meds to anyone unless it were in the worse case scenario.
I’m still having trouble focusing in class and at work.
I work at an outlet store in a tourist town, and it’s just starting spring break season today..I nearly had a mental break down today, because I had people talking on the radio in my ear, phones were ringing, new associates were asking me questions…
I just need something to calm my nerves….and help me process one thing at a time.
(I also have auditory processing disorder…to top it all off.)

I just need some sort of remedy that won’t cause me more problems than I already have.

  • The real source of your problems as you describe them is the lack of understanding of your Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), and not knowing how to avoid situations where your APD is areal problem.

APD is a listening disability, or not being able to process all that you hear, which includes speech. This makes following conversations difficult, and sometimes impossible, and problems with following verbal instructions. Stress maens that you are less able to cope with your APD.
So you could be in the wrong type of job for your APD too muchg auditory processing required.
One of the problems facing many who have APD is processing normal conversations with low levels of background noise (pink sound) what you have describes would be pure torture for me with my APD issues.

Some who have APD can sometimes be miss diangosed as having ADD or ADHD, this can happen if you are refeered to the wrong type of diagnostic consultant, or a consultant who is not aware of APD or not able to diagnose APD. Having said that it is possible to have both APD and ADHD.

For more information about APD have at the resources listed below, and you could also join the adult APD forum the OldAPDs which has now been running for over 10 years.

  • Exercises to improve Attention Deficit Disorder can be very helpful in reducing or even eliminating the everyday symptoms of ADHD.

Encourage physical exercise. One of the best treatments for children with ADD is exercise
preferably vigorous exercise. Exercise helps work off excess energy, helps focus attention, and stimulates certain beneficial hormones and neurochemicals. You also may use exercise when the child is acting up or seems overstimulated. Ask him to go out and run around the gym a few times, not as a punishment, but as a means of refocusing and letting off excessive energy. Exercise bikes work well also.

Implementing a better diet and exercise plan, and modifying the home environment to minimize distractions. # whole wheat, whole fruits, dark leafy greens, carrots, nuts, etc.

Refrain from drinking milk and other dairy. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2039733/
There has been speculation if milk proteins may have a role in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, depressions and schizophrenia in some cases. There are major supports to the hypothesis that ADHD may be linked to increased levels of neuroactive peptides and increased urinary peptide levels [158,159]. A diet free of milk, milk products and gluten may in many cases give reduced ADHD symptoms [158]. Further, opioid peptides derived from food proteins (exorphins) have been found in urine of autistic patients [160]. This area of investigation is important and large scale, good quality randomised controlled trials are needed.

Exercise can be helpful for improving ADD and ADHD symptoms. How does exercise affect ADHD and the brain? John J. Ratey, MD, provides some answers. http://add.about.com/od/treatmentoptions/a/ratey.htm

Attention deficit disorder is often referred to as ADD or ADHD. In some cases you may be able to control the symptoms of attention deficit disorder through exercise.
    # Get plenty of exercise. Studies are starting to show that exercise can help people who have ADHD. If you feel hyper during school, talk to a teacher about taking activity breaks so you can stay focused and concentrate better when in class. Take frequent activity breaks while studying or doing homework.

Give it up. There is NO way to effectively treat AD(H)D "naturally". Ritalin™ (NEVER used to treat insomnia, btw) and Adderall™ are the gold standards of treatment because they WORK. Period.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fraudster trying to sound smart and/or sell you something.
