how do you get a thyroid condition?
i have a project for health class and need to know how thyroid conditions are obtained. i know how they are diagnosed, i just need to know how people get them. (please state the difference, if any, between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism)
Sometimes you get one from your body attacking itself (auto-immune), exposure to radiation (results in hypothyroidism) or too much or too little iodine in the diet.
It is not contagious, if that is what you mean. It is hereditary though. Some symptoms are the same whether hypO or hypER, such as fatigue (for different reasons). Most are opposites: hypO may have cold intolerance, constipation, excessive sleepiness, weight gain where one that is hypER, may have heat intolerance, diarrhea, insomnia, and weight loss.
