    They can be since people with other family members have a greater likelihood of getting a thyroid problem. For instance, if your mother has hypothyroidism, you have a higher risk of getting it (up to 50%).

    Thyroid problems, especially hypothyroidism, are very common. 14 million people have hypothyroidism and 3 million people have hyperthyroidism.
