Itchy Scalp Since Giving Birth? Natural Remedies?

I didn’t have this with my other births, so am not sure what to do. It can even sometimes be painful. Also, due to scratching I have slight dandruff, but I think the problem is more than that. I already take Vegan DHA that has improved my skin so much that I don’t have to use lotion daily in this Northern Virginia wintry weather. However, my scalp, even with me testing not washing everyday for two months, has not improved. I don’t wish to used Head and Shoulders or other medicated shampoos, but would prefer something that works from the inside out, like extra an extra vitamin or herb perhaps? Thank you!

This is a puzzle and can’t be answered without asking some questions. So ask yourself: Are you taking any supplements, eating any foods, drinking any teas or using any soaps (even Dreft) that you weren’t using before? If you can think of anything, try leaving it off for 3 weeks.

Have you tried switching to an all natural shampoo from the health food store? You may have developed an allergy to some chemical and there is a possibility that this problem is just coincidental with the birth. I like Nature’s Gate Tea Tree Calming shampoo, which has tea tree, lemon balm, nettles and other herbs that calm irritated scalp.

Chlorine is a real skin irritant. There is a $30 filter you can put on your shower or you can catch rain water and heat it up for washing and rinsing your hair. The rinse is especially important. Try rinsing with chamomile tea if your hair is light or sage tea if it is dark. (Sage can dry up mother’s milk.)

Internally, Nettles can help with allergies. Buy capsules or extract, or drink the tea daily. If you have other problems associated with the birth (moodiness, cramps) you could try Vitex extract capsules for a month and see if things balance out. (Vitex has not been tested in nursing mothers.)
