NATURAL REMEDIES FOR ANXIETY?

I have been taking Mirtazapine 15mg for 6 weeks now, and I have been extremely irritable. I know my body, and I know this medicine is not good for it. I have taken SSRI’s in the past and they gave me suicidal thoughts. I really am tired of being put on prescription medicines. I have severe anxiety though. My heart starts to pump fast and my hands shake ALL the time. Is there any natural supplements that can help anxiety? My anxiety is preventing me from living a normal life. It is hard for me to get a job, because my hands shake so bad. My hands shaking is very embarrassing, and it causes even more anxiety. I don’t want any prescription medications at all. I need to find something that is all natural to help my anxiety. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, I have had my blood work done and everything came back fine. I have had traumatic experiences in the past, but I am seeing a therapist. My anxiety and hands shaking have nothing to do with these traumatic experiences, and my doctor says I am healthy. My hands shaking and anxiety goes all the way back to when I was a child. My hands have always been shaky, and the only apparent reason is anxiety.

    For a start I recommend going to a health store and getting Bach Rescue Remedy. This is a homeopathic remedy very good for anxiety and panic attacks. I suspect that there is a lot more going on than just anxiety. I would highly recommend you find a qualified naturopath in your area for further assessment and treatment.

    There are a few herbs you can use.
    Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) can be used in a decoction, tincture or capsule/tablet. The recommended adult dosage is 3-7.5 grams a day, or maximum 50 grams (2 ounces) per week. It’s often used with skullcap. CAUTIONS: It can cause drowsiness (such as when driving or using machinery. It can cause headache or gastrointestinal upset, or worsen anxiety/insomnia, but this is rare. The root is used.

    Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is best used in a tea/infusion, tincture, or capsule/tablet. The recommended adult dosage is 2-4 grams a day or maximum 30 grams (1 ounce) a week. There are no known cautions for lemon balm. The leaves are used. It’s often used with rosemary. It’s also safe for children.

    Limeflowers (Tilia spp.) are best used in a tea/infusion, tincture, or capsule/tablet. The recommended adult dosage is 3-7.5 grams a day, or maximum 50 grams (2 ounces) per week. CAUTIONS: it can occasionally cause allergic reactions. Pollen can provoke hay fever. It’s often used with hawthorn. It’s safe for children as well. The dried flowers are used.

    Motherwort (Leonorus cardiaca) is best used in a tea/infusion, tincture, or capsule/tablet. The recommended adult dosage is 2-4 grams a day or maximum 30 grams (1 ounce) a week. CAUTIONS: don’t take during pregnancy. Avoid in heavy menstrual bleeding. Motherwort is often used with cramp bark, and the flowering top is used.

    If you are a child (which if you were I’d think you to be at least 12 years old), 12-16 year olds should use the low adult use. If you are taking drugs prescribed by your doctor or hospital, check with them, or with a registered herbal or naturopathic practitioner, before taking a herbal remedy.

    For the following instructions, the dosages apply to most but not all commonly available herbal remedies according to the book listed in my source box. However, I would use the recommended dosages listed for each herb.

    How to prepare a herbal tea:
    Add 1 heaped teaspoon of fresh or 1 level teaspoonful of dried herb material such as leaves and flowers to a teapot. Pour in a cupful of boiling water. Next, stir, cover, and let stand for 10 minutes. Strain, add honey if desired, and drink.

    How to prepare a decoction:
    First, 1 heaped teaspoonful of fresh or dried herb material such as bark, berries, or root and put in a non aluminum saucepan. Add 1 1/2 cups of water and gently bring to a boil. Simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Then remove from the heat and carefully strain into a cup or other container. Add honey if you’d like and drink. Larger quantities can be prepared if required (for example, 1 ounce (25 grams) herb material to 1/4 cup of water).

    How to prepare a tincture:
    Standard tinctures are made using 1 part dried herb material to 3 parts alcohol solution. Place the chopped herb material-root, leaf, flower, or fruit-in a clean, preferably sterilized, glass jar or pan and stir in the required amount of alcohol. For each 4 ounces (100 grams) of dried herb material, add one cup of alcohol solution. Then stir well, make sure that herb material is fully covered, close lid, and label clearly. Stir or shake the contents thoroughly for a few minutes each day for 10 days. Strain into a sterilized glass bottle, seal with a cap, and label.
    Additional information: Use organic vodka or other good quality spirit of similar strength. Fresh plan materials require a 40% alcohol solution. Dried plant material can be made with lower strength alcohol, typically 25%. Below 20%, alcohol solutions may decay.

    Tablets can be made by simply compressing dried herb material or a dry extract into tablet form, though herb material is usually combined with excipients (binding agents and additives) which maintain the tablet’s shape and structure but dissolve in the stomach or intestines. Read the label. Capsules generally contain dried powdered herb material or soft or dry concentrated extracts. Good quality capsules are packed in tightly so air cannot circulate through the powder. You can purchase vegetarian or non-vegetarian gelatine capsules (size 00) for filling at home.
