Moderate exercise is actually good for your skin. It helps you maintain a healthy body and manage your stress levels, too. If you find your acne is aggravated by regular exercise, then you may want to examine your routine.
What do you wear? Where do you go? How hard do you work? Exercise-related acne is usually caused by something you put on your body rather something you do with it. Remove these outside factors, and you may put an end to your workout breakouts.
Here are just a few things to watch for.
Acne & Exercise – Make-up. When exercising, wear as little make-up as possible. Even oil-free and non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) cosmetics can clog pores if worn during heavy exercise. When you’re done working out, wash as soon as possible.
Acne & Exercise – Sunscreen. If your regimen takes you outdoors, always wear sunscreen. While acne may improve slightly after brief periods in the sun, studies show that prolonged exposure actually promotes comedones (clogged pores) and, of course, sun damage. Some kinds of acne medication make skin more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is even more important. When choosing a sunscreen, look for products that are oil-free and have a protection factor of at least SPF 15 for both UVA and UVB rays. Like make-up, sunscreen can travel across the skin’s surface and lodge in the pores — so wash immediately after working out.
Acne & Exercise – Clothing. If you’re prone to body acne, avoid garments made exclusively with lycra or nylon. Why? Some synthetic fabrics can trap the heat and moisture against your skin, creating a fertile breeding ground for the bacteria that contribute to acne. For moderate exercise, your best bet is lightweight, loose-fitting cotton, or a lycra-cotton blend. Natural fabrics allow the skin to breathe, and loose garments are less likely to cause friction. If you’re exercising vigorously and working up a good sweat, however, you may want to try some of the new fabrics designed to wick moisture away from your skin.
Acne & Exercise – Equipment. Some people are more likely to get acne or have their lesions aggravated in the areas affected by sports equipment. The best defense against friction-related breakouts is a good fit — make sure your helmet doesn’t slide around on your forehead, or your wetsuit isn’t too tight under the arms. You can also curb equipment-triggered breakouts by lining your helmet with a layer of soft, washable cotton fabric; it’s a great use for those old t-shirts, too. And no matter what the sport, it’s always a good idea to keep your equipment clean and dry when not in use.
Acne & Exercise – Moisture. Mom was right: You should get out of those wet clothes! No matter how you get your exercise — treadmill, trail, tennis court, or whatever — don’t sit around in your sweaty clothes or wet bathing suit when you’re done. If you can, shower off immediately and change into dry clothes before driving home. If this isn’t possible, change into dry clothes and wipe down as well as you can. When toweling sweat off your face, always use a clean towel, and blot gently rather than wipe. Vigorous wiping can irritate your skin, driving make-up and sunscreen deeper into the pores.
Acne & Exercise – Showering. Again, it’s best to shower immediately after working out. You may want to use a medicated exfoliant cleanser, but always be gentle with your skin. Scrubbing harder isn’t going to make you any cleaner, or make your acne go away — and it may actually irritate existing lesions or promote the development of new ones. If you can’t shower right away, you can still curb breakouts by wiping down with medicated pads; keep a few in your gym bag just in case.
So keep up the good work! A healthy exercise program is an integral part of your overall health; and a healthy body is more likely to have healthy skin. Just keep an eye on the various factors that accompany your regimen, and try to remove the acne triggers — you’ll be on your way to breakout-free workouts.
As I waded through some information on diets for three years old children to prepare for my afternoon class I came across a simple article with a picture that caught my attention .
I had written an article about developing the skill of gratitude and thought this picture showed it well.
Why is it that some students and adults for that matter seem to commit to what they want to achieve and others just drift and manage to do enough to keep in the boundaries of mediocrity
I think myself that it is basically down to the depth of their desire and their belief in themselves that propels the committed ones forward to take action and move towards their desired goals. If they do not have that belief or desire of where they want to be and what they want to do in their future careers then they drift into the mediocrity of daily life.
One method I believe that can move us forward to where we want to be is when we set simple disciplines in the form of daily tasks. If we can find our inspiration that will ignite the desire to enable us to set up and perform small daily actions that will in turn lead us to create positive results in our lives that in effect make us unstoppable.
The price is living with regret, failure, ill heath, and poverty. All because we have neglected to carry out this daily discipline. I have tried really hard to instill this daily discipline in my daughters by letting them see where this lack of commitment in young people has resulted in living their lives on welfare with a few children and little money to get by.
Everyone has the ability to change and change does not have to be insurmountable. All it takes is small changes daily in the way you do things and gradually you will start to see that small changes bring about major results.
So how do we start to put in action our daily disciplines.
We first of all need a clear idea of what we want for the future. Do you know what you want for your future?….You need a clear vision of what you want..I know what I want.. It does not matter what age you are or where you are right now. I have a plan to achieve in 2 years time, I am 57 years old and I have daily tasks I do to move me towards that plan. One of those daily tasks is writing this article.
Set down your daily tasks. Use your willpower to perform these daily tasks and in a matter of weeks these daily tasks will become habits. These small changes will not require you to completely change everything you do they will just mean that you start practicing your new daily success tasks.
Our desire will always tell us what we want but desire will only become reality when we put the wheels in motion to turn our desire into reality .
Remember the saying “if you want something done give it to a busy person” that is because the person is a “Doer” they just get on with things and get the work done.
It is important for you to see a vivid picture in your mind of the person you want to become in the future. Keep your faith strong that you will achieve your dreams. Always try to do a little better today than what you did yesterday.
Do this and you will live the life you planned.
Acne Hygiene
One of the most common misconceptions about acne is that it’s caused by dirt. It’s not! Acne is caused by a combination of factors you can’t control, like your hormone balance and the natural pace of your skin’s renewal system. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can control that may help you keep your acne in check. Begin by following these simple suggestions for healthy-skin hygiene.
Acne Prevention – Tip #1: Don’t over-wash. Since dirt is not causing your acne, excessive scrubbing and washing won’t make it go away. Try to limit yourself to two washings per day — anything more than that can leave your healthy skin dry, and your acne-prone areas irritated. Habitual over-washing may also stimulate extra oil production, which could result in more breakouts.
Acne Prevention – Tip #2: Skip harsh scrubs. It’s okay to exfoliate, but be sure to use a gentle formula with small, smooth grains. Avoid products with almond or apricot shell fragments; they can irritate or even tear your skin and further aggravate your acne.
Acne Prevention – Tip #3: Say no to alcohol. If you use a toner, avoid products with high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol, or common rubbing alcohol. A strong astringent, alcohol strips the top layer of your skin, causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The result? Dry, red skin — and possibly more blemishes.
Acne Prevention – Tip #4: Don’t squeeze or pick. Squeezing or picking your blemishes — with fingernails, pins or anything else — can force bacteria deeper into the skin, causing greater inflammation and infection. You’ll also increase the damage to the surrounding skin, so the blemish is more likely to leave a permanent acne scar.
Acne Prevention – Tip #5: Hands off! Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria that causes breakouts) is a normal resident of your skin; it doesn’t lead to acne until it gets trapped inside the hair follicle. Excessive touching of your face, including rubbing or even resting your chin in your hands, can drive bacteria into your pores — where it can begin its dirtywork.
Acne Prevention – Tip #6: Work out, wash off. When you exercise, your movement generates heat; clothing and equipment cause friction. Until you shower off, heat and moisture are trapped against your skin, creating an ideal breeding ground for the spread of bacteria. So whenever you can, shower off immediately after exercising.
Acne Prevention Treatment – Find a regimen and stick with it. Most cases of mild acne can be improved with “over-the-counter” products, or products that don’t require a prescription from your doctor. There is a wide range of treatments available, and there’s a good chance one of them will work for you. If you start treatment before your acne gets severe, you’ll have a better chance of avoiding physical and emotional problems down the road. But if your acne gets worse or lasts more than a couple of weeks, see a dermatologist. Oh the guilt of disliking Christmas when “Tis The season to be Merry” but I just don’t get it.
I have thought about this many times let me tell you and so much so that I had to put my thoughts into words hoping that it may solidify some kind of answer in my mind.
Often when I write down what I think, the words start to make it real and come flowing out in great rapidity, giving me a reasoned and logical conclusion to my initial question. It perturbs me why I feel like this to say the least.
Known to my friends as Miss Positivity and known to my students as the great Motivator, how can a person like me be so negative about a time of year when we are all meant to be so happy?
Sitting in a Christmas traffic jam is the perfect time to really get to grips with what is going on around me.
The expectant and rushed faces in the cars make them look like members of a flock caught in some whirlwind of buying and shopping and buying some more…just in case.
After all the shops will be closed for 2 whole days and what on earth will we all do if we run out of things we need. Ah..there is that statement that jumps out at me …”things we need” or things that we think we need.
Now just in case you think I am one of those half naked tree hugging back to nature sorts ..I am not but I just cannot get into the whole hype of it all.
Yes… the music is lovely. Yes the mulled wine is even better! And the food is great. But what is it all about?
Is it about giving or about comparing the giving? My daughter was horrified last week at school when she deposited her presents on friends and one girl had given her a present that was in her mind more expensive than the one she had given. I got it in the ear the whole car journey back from school and naturally my renditions of “It’s not about the money its about the giving” fell on deaf ears.
Can I blame her for our different perceptions coming from a radically different childhood? She is growing up in a western consumerism society, I grew up in Africa.
At 12 years old the conditioning into believing that material goods bring self fulfillment has taken root. All around are tactics and advertising encouraging us to spend more, conditioning us to believe that the more we buy the happier we become.
Why is it then that the happiest people I have come across are African children in a village with a stick and the rim of a bicycle tyre to play with.
They roll the rim along the ground with the stick and their laughter resounds through the bushland.
Oh that life were so simple!
Our western society is engulfed in greed.
Greed that was allowed to grow out of control and to eventually put us in the mess we are now in. Yet it still continues, this constant pursuit of happiness through material consumption.
I remember a friend of mine in S. Africa telling me that one morning in his first week of freedom as he called it, he sat on a grassy bank watching the traffic pass by in the morning rush of Johannesburg.
He counted on both hands out of hundreds of cars how many people he thought looked happy. In the final analysis he amazed himself that for so long he had been one of the miserable faces continuing on the chore of going to a job he hated for years tied up in the belief that acquiring more money would make him happy.
Don’t get me wrong I do not go down the road of “money is the route of all evil” but I just feel it has all become too much.
Money is great when you are happy with what you are doing. If you hate what you do then never in a million years will it change that.
In my personal life at present I am faced with two teenagers with so called “needs”.
The constant battle of enforcing household rules and in particular the one where money comes from doing jobs sometimes feels like a battle against society as well.
How can we instill the ethos that to get rewarded you have to do something and you have to contribute. When I look around me today all I see are people who take and do not give back. It has become a way of life and something they feel they are entitled too.
If they want to give their friends expensive presents at Christmas then they should work for it . In that way they will feel a sense of achievement and self -respect …something that many teenagers today don’t have.
When I lecture in college I use my students as a window on Society. Their attitudes and aspirations by the time they reach me are usually molded by school and most of all they arrive with preconceived ideas of learning .
They have not learnt how to learn. Their curriculum is so tied up with results and stats that the joy of learning had been pushed aside. It has become results focused.
I take it upon myself to try and retrain their thinking.
To show them that anything is possible when you unleash your creativity and find that natural curiosity that will turn you into a lifelong learner.
I try my best using My stories of Africa to extend their boundaries of what will make them happy. Some of them get it and move forward ..some don’t.
So where do I stand?
I stand outside Western society right now looking in. I can see beyond it and what I can see is space, lots of flat open space off into the Horizon just to the point where the earth meets the sky. I can see myself there looking into the distance.
I have a plan for the future that is working and that’s what keeps me going for now.
It is a skin disease that affects each individual that has it differently. Every case of serious acne has to be looked at as an individual case in order to be properly treated. There is no catch-all treatment that can be used for every case.
Furthermore, a lot of trial and error is usually needed in order to find an effective treatment individual by individual. There are many acne products that are mass-marketed as the best cure for acne. It is very important to realize that products that are marketed towards acne sufferers and that can be bought off the shelf in the supermarket, do not cure acne.
They manage, mask or suppress the symptoms of acne. It is important to recognize this as well as to realize that acne is not a result of bad hygiene. If your acne is progressively getting worse do not think that it is enough to wash your skin often and to use an over the counter product. If your acne is getting worse, seek medical advice for stronger products that might only be available with a prescription.Acne treatments vary from being off the shelf, over-the-counter creams, prescribed and surgical.
Over the counter acne products are usually topical medicines that contain Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid. These are usually used to treat mild cases of acne where an individual is attempting to halt the progression of acne and clear up some troublesome pimples. They can also be used during severe stages of acne in combination with another treatment. Doctors usually recommend that the acne-infected area be washed very gently with warm water and a mild soap and then the topical treatment applied. When acne progresses to the moderate or severe stage, doctors and dermatologists will usually use a combination of treatments in order for maximum effectiveness in halting any further development of the skin disease.
Light therapy and extraction are often used at the moderate stage, in combination with an oral antibiotic or a retinoid cream, depending on the observations and recommendations of your doctor.Since acne is such a complex condition to properly treat, it is not advisable to attempt to self-medicate. If you try over the counter products and they do not work.
Do not give up thinking that you have an incurable case of acne. Seek further professional medical advice. A doctor or a dermatologist will try to stop your acne from getting out of hand and will make an aggressive attempt at using a combination of products to prevent the possibility of acne scarring. If you are serious about putting a halt to your acne, learn about the latest acne fighting products and how they can possibly work for your type of acne from your doctor. Do not make off the shelf products the extent of your fight against acne. Be as aggressive about fighting acne as acne is about progressing step by step into a serious skin condition.
For the most part of my day at college I am spend in endless discussions with teenagers on issues that range from “what is bothering them right now” to the serious conversation like we had today. We watched a program about people who were in a vegetative state and have now been shown to have brain reactions to various questions. Some major new research that will have a profound effect on reactions to people who are in a long term coma .
So the range of what we talk about is far reaching and every now and then ……well I just decide to stop being the teacher and have some fun .
Just today one of the students announced it was her birthday and she had ordered a cake to come to the classroom ..Some innate reaction when off in my brain at the mention of chocolate cake and so on the music went and the party began.
Down went the pens and paper and before we could get through the second mouthful of our cake on when the latest top of the charts ….Gangham style .
We all did our Gangham style version around the room [me included} and it was only natural of course with this generation of technological beings that a few videos were made of their teacher doing Gangham style around the classroom and quickly uploaded onto facebook. As a student in the class is friendly with my daughter this video was quickly flagged in her direction.
Now I have a tendency to dance around the kitchen in the house and have been asked on various occasion by my daughters if I ever danced in front of my students .
“of course not!” I would never embarass you like that ?
So it was not long before my phone started
“have you seen yourself”?
Of course I have …but then who cares?
An old friend of mine once told me years ago when I was in my 40,s and him in his 50,s that there is one really good thing about moving into the 50 + age group.
It’s the fact that you just could not care less what people thought of anything you did and in fact it just did not upset you anymore if you told people straight just like it is ….if you know what I mean
You know what ?
He is right!!!
This happens when the parent does not have many qualifications themselves so ask themselves the questions of how could they be qualified to do that job.
It is a fact of homeschooling that many homeschooled teens can actually complete four years of traditional high-school studies in 24 months or less.
Really ?
Well if you sat down and thought about it then it does seem possible when there are no distractions and the teenager is able to focus on the task at hand.
Now I am a teacher/lecturer myself and I can tell you that with over 40 years being in this profession I have witnessed major changes in the administrative workload that goes with the job. The amount of time that is spent on taking registers, collecting paperwork , preparing for activities and especially science classes ,the time to tidy up and then the time spent on disciplining is all time that is eating into the actual teaching and learning times .
In fact to be honest I often ask myself the question.
”Did I train to be a teacher or an administrative manager”
Of course in the days when I completed my teacher training in the 70,s it was all about developing your techniques as an educator in the classroom and all of us were assessed on our ability to relate to the students to pass on our subject knowledge in an effective and stimulating manner. In other words we were encouraged to become teachers that would inspire students to learn and develop. So be it…..today we fill out forms and tick boxes.
Anyway I am getting carried away with the realities of being a teacher today but it absolutely true that the large part of a school day would be taken up in mindless administrative tasks that are totally illiminated with a teenager that is being schooled at home.
This could be one reason a family make the decision to home school their teenagers ,others could be the travelling time to get to school, bullying issues, peer pressure issues or teenagers that have special needs that are not accommodated by the schools within travelling distance.
All of these factors can result in teenage stress which in turn affects learning and attainment levels.
If a family decides to homeschool their teenager then good planning and record keeping will be essential .
Of course most importantly your teenager must be up for the idea as well. You can plan your home school program with your teenager’s strengths and weaknesses in mind. Also important is their learning style, are they a kinesthetic learner, a visual learner, an auditory learner or a combination of a few styles. Go for a program that will enable your teenager to pursue their interests and also cover the basics that they will need to progress further into adult education.
Remember that there is no course that suits all teenagers so make sure you do adequate research before you put your plan into action and good Luck!
